BEING VERY GOOD AT WHAT YOU DO
“Now King Solomon sent and brought Huram
from Tyre. He was the son of a widow from the
tribe of Naphtali, and his father was a man of Tyre, a bronze worker; he
was filled with wisdom and understanding and skill in working with all kinds of
bronze work. So he came to King Solomon and did all his work.”
I have a personal motto, from the Bible,
in Ecclesiastes 9:10, “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your
might; for there is no work or device or knowledge or wisdom in the
grave where you are going.” Might means strength. But working with your
strength shouldn’t be all that you do, you must learn to work with wisdom and
be very good at what you do.
Huram was said to have wisdom, understanding and skill in
working with all kinds of bronze. Just one thing! He knew just one thing –
bronze. You may know a lot, but knowing one thing too well and being very good
at it is equally great. Bill Gates is known for computers, Mark Zuckerberg is
known for Facebook, Tiger Woods is known for golf, Cristiano Ronaldo is known
for football, Serena Williams is known for tennis, Tara Durotoye is known for
makeup, Deola Sagoe is known for fashion designing, etc. Find that one thing
you can do very well and devote your all to doing it.
I love what Martin Luther King Jr. said, “If a man is
called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as a Michaelangelo
painted, or Beethoven composed music or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should
sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say,
'Here lived a great street sweeper who did his job well.’” Praise God.
